France Recognizes Palestine, Renewing Calls for a Two-State Solution at the UN

Times Square Global Live | UN Coverage – Reporter: Winny Power

New York, 80th UN General Assembly — Amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on September 22 at the 80th UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting that France officially recognizes the State of Palestine. The announcement drew warm applause from over 140 world leaders, with the entire Palestinian delegation standing in respect. President Mahmoud Abbas participated via video, as U.S. visa denial prevented his physical attendance, expressing full support.

Macron stated: “In line with France’s longstanding commitment to peace in the Middle East, today I recognize the State of Palestine.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized, “Statehood for Palestine is a right, not a reward.” The remarks were widely seen as a direct response to the Israeli government.

France’s recognition triggered a ripple effect. The day prior, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal announced recognition, with an additional ten countries expected to follow in the coming days. Currently, approximately three-quarters of UN member states recognize Palestine, although major Western nations maintain that statehood should emerge through negotiations with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly opposed the move, calling it “a reward for Hamas,” and threatened potential unilateral annexation of parts of the West Bank. The U.S. government also expressed opposition, warning that recognition could undermine ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.

For Palestinians, the move offers a glimmer of hope. Nordin, a resident of Gaza, said: “This is a beginning for the Palestinian people, a ray of hope. We deserve a country of our own.”

The international community widely regards a two-state solution as the only viable path to resolve the century-long conflict. France’s recognition, alongside other nations, may inject new momentum into the Middle East peace process.
