The world's largest charity cycling event celebrates its 46th anniversary this year
The largest road cycling event in the United States, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, launched its 46th annual event in the five boroughs of New York City. Despite the wet and rainy weather on Sunday, the event still attracted about 30,000 cyclists.
The event has become a New York City tradition since 1977 and has been held every year except for suspension in 1991 due to sponsorship issues and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year's 40-mile course starts in Manhattan, passes through the Bronx, returns to Manhattan, then passes through Queens and Brooklyn before ending in Staten Island.
The first wave of cyclists will set off in Lower Manhattan at 7:30 a.m., while the final wave is scheduled to start at 10:25 a.m. To ensure the safety of cyclists and the smooth flow of events, a number of streets will be temporarily closed to car traffic, from Sixth Avenue in Manhattan to the Queens Bridge, Pulaski Bridge, and to Staten Island Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
The tour also includes a fundraiser. With proceeds from the event, Bike New York provides free cycling skills to more than 17,000 children and adults each year, focusing on underserved communities, making it the largest free cycling education program in the United States.
