The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) opened on Tuesday with Annalena Baerbock, former Foreign Minister of Germany, sworn in as the new President. She is the fifth woman in history to hold the position and urged member states to act with courage and unity in addressing war, poverty, and climate change.
In a solemn ceremony, Baerbock placed her hand on the original 1945 UN Charter, signed at the San Francisco Conference, and received the ceremonial gavel from outgoing President Philémon Yang of Cameroon. The Charter, preserved by the U.S. National Archives, returned to UN headquarters for the first time in decades and will be on display in September as a reminder of the collective pledge to peace and human rights.
“Our world is indeed in pain, but imagine how much worse it would be without the United Nations,” Baerbock declared, underscoring the indispensable role of the UN in humanitarian relief.
