UN Chief Condemns Deadly Gang Attack in Haiti; At Least 40 Dead
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned a brutal gang attack in Haiti that killed at least 40 people, including women, children, and the elderly, in the commune of Cabaret. The overnight assault on September 11 marks the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued the country since last year.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Mr. Guterres expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the victims’ families and called on Haitian authorities to pursue justice. “The Secretary-General is alarmed by the levels of violence rocking Haiti,” Dujarric said, urging Member States to accelerate support for the Multinational Security Support mission to aid the Haitian National Police.
Just two weeks ago, Guterres warned the UN Security Council that Haiti’s state authority is crumbling as armed groups tighten their grip on Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions, displacing families and disrupting daily life.
The humanitarian situation is dire: six million people need aid, 1.3 million are displaced, and less than 10 percent of the $908 million UN appeal has been funded. Guterres called the response “shamefully overlooked and woefully underfunded,” warning that 1.7 million people may receive no assistance at all.
