WASHINGTON — U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping could meet as many as four times in 2026, as both sides seek to stabilize a fragile trade truce between the world’s two largest economies.

Speaking on CNBC, Bessent said China’s purchases of U.S. soybeans are “right on schedule,” referencing an arrangement for Beijing to buy 87.5 million metric tons over the next three and a half years.

Bessent outlined a possible calendar of leader-level engagements next year: a Trump state visit to Beijing in April, a Xi state visit to Washington, Xi’s expected presence at the G20 summit hosted at Trump National Doral Miami, and Trump’s potential attendance at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen in November 2026.

The comments follow a Trump–Xi phone call on Monday, their first direct conversation since the leaders met in Busan, South Korea, in October, when the two sides announced steps aimed at de-escalating trade tensions.
