No Child Should Pay for Education With Their Life – International Day to Protect

Geneva —
On the sixth observance of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack (2025),the numbers tell a grim story. Between 2022 and 2023, there were more than 6,000 incidents targeting students, educators, and schools. The use of schools for militarypurposes rose by 20%, and more than 10,000 students were killed, abducted, detained, or injured.
Most alarming: attacks on schools in conflict zones surged by 44% in the past year.Thousands of children and teachers have been killed, injured, or traumatized, leaving entire
communities devastated.
The UN Secretary-General’s 2024 report on Children and Armed Conflict verified 41,370 grave violations against children—the highest in nearly three decades. The worst-affected
areas included Gaza, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Nigeria, and Haiti. Attacks on schools rose by 44%, incidents of rape and
sexual violence increased by 34%, and children subjected to multiple grave violations rose by 17%.
At today’s high-level event in Geneva, themed “Challenging Narratives, Reframing Action,”UN officials and partners stressed a clear message: schools are not battlefields, and children
should never pay for education with their lives.
Despite the dire context, there are glimmers of progress. In 2024, nearly 16,500 children associated with armed groups received protection or reintegration support, bringing the total released since 2005 to over 200,000. Commitments and agreements—such as those with armed groups in Syria—offer cautious optimism that change is possible.
