During a massive wave of Russian air and drone strikes on Ukraine, multiple drones crossed into Polish airspace, with one striking a residential building. In response, Poland—with NATO allies’ support—shot down several Russian drones, marking the first time Moscow’s drones have been intercepted over NATO territory.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk called it a “massive provocation”, warning this is the closest Poland has come to open conflict since World War II. Overnight, Polish authorities recorded 19 separate airspace violations. Three airports—including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport—were temporarily shut, while residents in eastern regions were told to take shelter.
NATO at a Crossroads
The incident has revived global debate over NATO’s collective defense principle. Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. Since 1949, it has been triggered only once—after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of “crossing new limits,” reporting Ukraine endured 415 drone attacks and over 40 missiles in a single night. He warned that without a strong response, Russia will escalate further.
