Blossoms Along the Path
A Cross-Temporal Dialogue of Eastern Art in New York
Featuring Gu Yuehua and the Late Sun Lin

By Winny Power
Times Square Global Live (TSGL), New York
April 2026

Introduction

In New York—widely recognized as a global crossroads of culture—the exhibition “Blossoms Along the Path” presents a refined exploration of Eastern aesthetics, memory, and artistic continuity.

On the eve of the exhibition, artist Gu Yuehua arrived in New York from Shanghai, where she was warmly welcomed at John F. Kennedy International Airport by curator Deng Yan and her family.

This moment, while marking a physical arrival, also signals the beginning of a deeper artistic and cultural dialogue.

Exhibition Overview

The exhibition brings together recent works by artist Gu Yuehua alongside selected pieces by the late artist Sun Lin, creating a compelling dialogue between two artistic voices across time.

Sun Lin—both a creative counterpart and life partner of Gu Yuehua—played a profound role in shaping her artistic evolution. His works, characterized by introspective depth and philosophical resonance, are presented not as retrospective artifacts, but as an enduring presence within a shared artistic continuum.

Together, the exhibition is conceived as a trans-temporal dialogue, engaging with themes of memory, continuity, and the evolving nature of artistic expression, while situating individual creation within a broader human and cultural context.

On the Meaning of “Return”

TSGL: What does this exhibition represent for you personally?

Gu Yuehua:

“The phrase ‘Blossoms bloom along the path; one may return in due time’ reflects a state of being rather than a destination.

For me, this exhibition represents a form of return—not only geographically, but also emotionally and spiritually.

It is a moment of reconnection, both with my artistic journey and with the passage of time.”

On Presenting Sun Lin’s Work

TSGL: What does it mean to present Sun Lin’s work alongside your own?

Gu Yuehua:

“It is both companionship and dialogue.

Although his works belong to the past, they continue to carry presence in the present.

I hope audiences will not only see the artworks, but also feel the emotional continuity they embody—a connection that transcends time.”

On Eastern Art in a Global Context

TSGL: How does your work evolve within an international context such as New York?

Gu Yuehua:

“The essence does not change, but the way it is understood may shift.

Eastern art does not seek to adapt—it seeks to be seen.

New York provides an open and inclusive space where such dialogue can naturally unfold.”

Focus | Works and the Creative Process

The exhibition features 66 ceramic works created by Gu Yuehua in recent years. Each piece is fired at temperatures reaching approximately 1500°C, undergoing a transformation in which material, time, and heat converge.

This process produces a distinctive texture shaped not only by physical forces, but also by emotional and temporal layers.

During the exhibition preparation, TSGL conducted a studio visit with the artist. Reflecting on her creative process, she noted:

“Fire does not only transform form—it leaves behind traces of time.
What remains is not merely an object, but a moment that has been held still.”

For Gu Yuehua, ceramics represent an extension beyond painting—a transition from two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional space.

This shift is not only formal, but conceptual.

Her works embody the flow of time and the accumulation of emotion, capturing what she describes as “the moment when dew meets light”—a fleeting instant transformed into something tangible and enduring.

On Transitioning from Painting to Ceramics

TSGL: You transitioned from painting to ceramic creation. What does this shift mean to you?

Gu Yuehua:

“Painting is something I was formally trained in, but ceramics opened an entirely new dimension for me.

On canvas, the process allows for adjustment. In ceramics, however, the outcome is uncertain—the colors applied before firing often differ completely from the final result.

Once a brushstroke is placed, it cannot be changed. In that sense, it resembles life itself.”

“Ceramics are like a pure vessel. I often depict traditional motifs—flowers, gourds symbolizing blessings, persimmons representing good fortune—imagery rooted in cultural memory.”

“Both art and life require trial and transformation.

Just as porcelain is shaped through fire, people are shaped through experience. Some endure, others do not. Those that remain often become stronger and more resilient.”

“I sometimes compare this process to incense—
it transforms through burning, turning pain into fragrance, offering something meaningful to others.”

“The beauty of ceramics lies in their permanence.
Once fired, they can endure across time—perhaps even longer than painting.”

“I feel fortunate to leave behind these works—
not just as objects, but as traces of time and experience.”

Special Feature | Sun Lin

The late artist Sun Lin is known for a contemplative and introspective artistic approach, often engaging with themes of time, existence, and human experience.

Within this exhibition, his works are presented not only as individual pieces, but as part of an ongoing dialogue with Gu Yuehua’s practice. This curatorial approach introduces a temporal dimension, positioning his presence as both historical and continuous.

Curatorial Perspective
On the Exhibition Concept

TSGL: What is the central concept behind this exhibition?

Deng Yan:

“We aim not only to present artworks, but to create a context—
a space where time, memory, and life can be experienced through dialogue.

When Sun Lin’s works are presented alongside Gu Yuehua’s,
the exhibition becomes a continuous narrative rather than a singular moment.”

On Human Connection in Art

TSGL: You personally welcomed the artist at the airport. What does this gesture represent?

Deng Yan:

“Art does not begin in the gallery—it begins with human connection.

That moment of arrival was already part of the exhibition.”

Contextual Reflection

As Eastern artistic expressions gain increasing visibility in global cultural centers, exhibitions such as “Blossoms Along the Path” contribute to a broader dialogue on cultural identity, interpretation, and exchange.

Rather than positioning Eastern art as something newly discovered, the exhibition emphasizes its recontextualization within an international framework—allowing it to be encountered, understood, and experienced through a renewed lens.

Conclusion

This exhibition extends beyond a conventional presentation of artworks. It offers a reflection on continuity—between past and present, between individuals, and across cultural perspectives.

Through the interplay of Gu Yuehua’s work and the artistic legacy of the late Sun Lin, “Blossoms Along the Path” unfolds as a layered narrative of memory, presence, and artistic dialogue in New York.
